Label Versus File: The Crack in Chess's Information Supply Chain and Bangladesh's Invisible Middle

In my room in Mymensingh I have to set a paper board. Working on screen loses the hand, and what lands in the head when you push a piece with your fingers does not land with a mouse. That afternoon I set a black piece on e4 and opened a file. The label was plain: Samarkand, Round Eight (women), China leading at 15/16.

I assumed the inside would hold four score sheets, the pressure of the last ten minutes, a move like 23...Nd7 on board one — harmless on paper, a hanging sentence on the board.

Inside were 27 miniatures, 10 opening articles, three opening-video presenters, and four annotators' names: Aravindh, Giri, Gurel, Navara. Alongside them, marketing copy claiming that world-class players analysed their own games. The first number in the file was not 15/16. It was 225.

I tagged 640 league games in 2026 while working as an assistant coach at a small Mymensingh academy. That file had moves; this one has product. The tagging habit taught me one rule: the simpler the label, the more the inside deserves testing.

The label becomes the price

ChessBase Magazine is a periodic training publication combining annotated games, opening articles, videos and tactics, strategy and endgame material. Issue 225 draws on the Chess Festival Prague 2026, with analysis credited to Aravindh, Giri, Gurel and Navara, opening videos presented by Werle, King and Ris, and delivery through direct download, a PDF booklet, a postal booklet with a download key, and ChessBase Book for iPad, tablet and Mac.

Gather the verifiable numbers and you get ten opening articles, 27 miniatures, three video presenters, four analysts. Everything else in the file is language.

Against that sits my own ledger: every National Championship game from 2026 to 2026, tagged by participant age and corporate sponsorship. Two thousand six hundred rated games. Entries fell by more than half after 2026, and the collapse tracks participation, not talent — the Standard Chartered school pipeline died in 2026 and entries never recovered.

Unverifiable items include any single game, any single opening system, any move order, any engine evaluation, ACPL, engine match rate, novelty confirmation. A claim of new repertoire ideas stays an assertion until an independent reviewer runs the line through an engine.

This is a multi-format training package, not a standalone competitive report. The formatting map runs upstream to downstream: youth training and talent supply, then events and players and platforms, then content and commerce — Prague 2026 sits in the middle, issue 225 in the last stage. Bangladesh sits at the buyer's end of that river. We buy annotated games, read English analysis, sell PDFs at Tk 200, and produce no midstream product of our own. That position is the invisible middle.

Three tiers of contributor and one empty chair

Giri and Navara supply elite credibility. Aravindh and Gurel signal Indian and Turkish editorial reach — an inference, since the file carries no ratings. Werle, King and Ris are presenter-specialists chosen for repertoire and communication work rather than results. Among seven names, not one is Bangladeshi. That is not a complaint, it is arithmetic. We have run a national championship for thirteen years and produced 2,600 rated games, yet never converted them into a training product, because the line item for editorial, translation, digital platform and marketing was never written into the federation budget. The grant is small, but smallness is not the problem. The problem is that the money was never assigned to manufacturing material.

Format dependency and the electrical truth of Mymensingh

Load-shedding at noon takes a tablet to thirty percent and sends me back to the paper board. ChessBase Book runs inside a specific ecosystem; a postal booklet with a download key depends on the postal system. The value of training material is set less by its content than by its access path.

The contrarian turn

A promotional page is the most honest document in chess: it admits it is selling. The danger lives in the format that looks like a neutral report — a score, a round number, a country name. Nobody asks of a label reading 15/16: whose, in what format, under which tiebreak. The mismatch is not the scandal; the smoothness is.

Second, the 27 miniatures are chess's distance-covered metric: attractive numbers, painted road. The forty-move draws are where the real skill lives. Miniatures are a biased sample chosen because they are easy to digest; they teach tactical pattern, not patience.

Third, opening articles sell memory. Engines solved the first fifteen moves the way mid-table sides solved pressing with athleticism. The value sits in endgame and tactics sections, where judgement outranks recall.

Fourth, the seventeen-year grandmaster gap is not a talent drought. The spreadsheet says participation fell, not talent. Fifth, paid annotation matters most in exactly the countries where it is least affordable.

The next three tests

Separate the two files. Over the next three months I will watch three numbers: whether entries at the next National Championship cross one hundred and how many carry a corporate sponsor; whether a single line of federation funding is spent on material production and translation; and whether any independent reviewer challenges issue 225's claims. If no one does, then buyers are purchasing the label, not the file.
